'Kids of Whistler 2010' spreads 2010 Winter Games excitement

The school kids of Whistler are embracing the spirit of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and reaching out to involve the community in the spirit of the Games in Whistler.

As part of the 'Kids of Whistler 2010' project, local students will celebrate with a Family Concert on Tuesday, December 15.

The concert features holiday celebration performances by Whistler school kids that showcase cultures from around the world. Schools and classes have been assigned specific nations coming to Whistler in 2010, creating a virtual trip around the world for concert goers.

The Family Concert is part of the larger 'Kids of Whistler 2010' project. This fall, Myrtle Phillip, Spring Creek, Whistler Secondary School, École La Passerelle, Whistler Waldorf and the Resort Municipality of Whistler have teamed up to launch 'Kids of Whistler 2010.'  It is a five-faceted, school-based project designed to get students involved in the spirit and activity of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

"'Kids of Whistler 2010' provides local students with tangible opportunities to engage with and get excited about the 2010 Winter Games," said Mayor Ken Melamed. "It ensures local students share in the excitement."

Through the initiatives kids will learn about being good hosts, engage in community events and examine personal values associated with sport, culture and sustainability as well as make connections with Games participants and organizers.

Along with the concert, 'Kids of Whistler 2010' initiatives include the Kids of Whistler 2010 Montage, which is a multi-media montage capturing the lives of Whistler kids in 2010.  Games-related speakers are visiting the classrooms and a torch rally breakfast is planned for each school. Teachers have been using VANOC's /edu Olympic and Paralympic classroom resources to assist in their classroom studies.

Whistler parents, friends and citizens are encouraged to join in and support the 'Kids of Whistler 2010' project as kids participate in school-based initiatives designed to foster community and build excitement for 2010.
