Whistler holds a special place in the hearts of the people who live, work and play here. As a Host Mountain Resort for the 2010 Winter Games, residents have an unprecedented opportunity to get involved in our community, experience the excitement and energy of the Games and welcome the world.
Since the International Olympic Committee selected Vancouver as the Host City of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games back in 2003, the Games have been viewed as a catalyst for Whistler's journey to an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable future as defined in our Whistler2020 community vision: to become the premier resort community as we move toward sustainability.
Many partnerships have pulled together in support of producing extraordinary Games, while working to achieve our long-term community vision. Though the Games run just 27 days in 2010, this opportunity will create lasting legacies and ultimately, accelerate our journey to a successful future.
Whistler is home to the alpine skiing, biathlon, cross-country skiing, ski jumping, bobsleigh, luge and skeleton competitions, and Whistler Village will also be buzzing with free events for everyone. With Whistler Live! programming, you won't have to be a ticket holder to get one foot in the stadium, and an expanded public transit service will help you get around.
To enjoy every aspect of the Games, bookmark www.whistler2010.com or use your Games Planner as daily resources. Hosting the biggest winter sporting and cultural event in the world is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Whistler and every day will feel like it's our busiest season ever. Representing Canadians across our nation, Whistler residents will graciously host about 50,000 Athletes and their support teams, Games organizers, visitors and media from around the world.
On behalf of the Resort Municipality of Whistler, I invite you to join me in creating lasting memories that will shape our community post-Games. Together, we can move toward sustainable future and thrive as a legendary mountain resort community.
Mayor Ken Melamed
